"A tantalizing story of summer, secrets and deep unease" - Sue Wallman, author of Lying About Last Summer
I first discovered Faye’s books when I went to my first author event as a librarian, it was an exciting moment being a blogger and librarian. I bought both of her books and devoured them instantly, so gripping and thrilling, Faye’s latest book My Secret Lies With You is no exception. This book was totally addictive and definitely what I needed last weekend. I read it practically in one sitting.
Cait is on holiday in Wales for the first time since my her dad died. Along with her mum and her new partner, she is missing her dad a lot. It isn’t until she meets her next door neighbour, Marko and his two friends Hannah and Ifan that things get that bit more interesting. Two summers ago these three friends met Alys, a strange girl that changed their whole summer. Hannah feels that this missing person looks exactly like Ceri but they have never seen Alys since. Cait instantly felt a connection to the missing girl and she wants to know what happened and who this Alys really is.
When I first started reading this, it was only a month ago that I came back from Wales myself on holiday, I could picture the surrounding so clearly, which made this book even more unsettling for me. I’m going back there in the Summer – I don’t think I will be cliff diving – you’ll know what I mean when you read it this book. Whilst mystery and chills were at the heart of this story, I loved how Cait’s life was still very much part of the story with the passing of her dad and also a glimpse of a romance in the air that added that summer feel.
I’ve missed Faye’s writing, it’s been such a long time since What I Couldn’t Tell You? but I really liked how this book was slightly different from her previous books which I think I enjoyed more. The plot-line was completely different, I really liked the subconscious connection between Cait and the missing girl, they really empathised over each other with the loss of family members that made it really tangible. It made Cait realise just how important family really is and that you need to give everyone a chance. But it’s hard when feelings, loss, grief and mystery can cloud your judgement. Faye wove each of the characters perfect of that summer really added depth, mystery and just that creeping doubt of unease, you just couldn’t stop yourself from turning the next page and the next.
My Secret Lies With You, gets under-your-skin type of book and totally unputtadownable! It’s this summer’s YA thriller must read!
