Happy Friday my book friends. I’m very glad it’s the end of the week and the beginning of the weekend. First week back at work and I’m pooped! 😴 So today I’m really excited to bring you a new feature to my blog and venture further into the world of books that I live in. For those of who don’t know I’m a school librarian. I love my job there is no doubt about that, I get to inspire students with the books I read daily and support them in their education and daily lives. I’m proud and so privileged of where I am today.
So this new feature ‘ A Day in the Life of a School Librarian’ will post once a month with an different aspect of my role. Today’s post is about journey as a school librarian and I will show you my library. I’ve done a bit of a Q&A with me I really hope you enjoy it.
Hello, it’s me the librarian and not the book blogger, for today that is. This is the most recent photo of me in my library. I do anything to get top students to do.
How did you start out as a librarian? My career has always been in libraries since I was a Saturday Library Assistant when I came out of 6th Form, but this has been my first big moment in my career. I’ve been a school librarian for 3 official years and literally just starting my 4th school year. It’s been a crazy journey but a proud one. I’m the youngest librarian there has been at my school and in the borough librarians. I started at 21!
Tell us a little bit about your library? I work in a secondary school, so ages 11-18 and it’s perfect considering I read all the right age-levelled books. It’s an all girls school too and the last 2 years I’ve been working in a second library to our new partnered school for boys. So I’m librarian to two schools. Crazy I know.
Do you want to see my library?
These pictures is the most recent. I’ve never been a school librarian before so I’m always learning. Every day is a new day, never two the same. It’s took a good 2 years to find my way around things, how I wanted the library to be, I had a vision and I accomplished it. I’m always changing it though, probably annoying the students with that – constantly moving things around. In the last 4 Inset Days, I’ve done just that. I like making it different, better, more engaging. I love doing displays, and new initiatives. I love being creative.
What do I love about being a librarian? Without a doubt inspiring students? Creating book-weeks, getting authors in, oh and NEW BOOKS!
What’s been the most rewarding? In the boys library, it’s a brand new build so I’ve built it from scratch. Something really good for my career progression.
What do you dislike? Overdue books! They drive me up the wall. Trying to get books back is a big job but lately I seemed to have mastered it, I think.
I really hope you enjoyed this post. I live for books every day of my life. I LOVE IT!!!!
My mom works as a school librarian too! I dream of being a writer, but it’s definitely a career path I’ve considered myself. I’m glad you love your job so much!
I do! Aw that’s so great to hear. Anything book related is the best career.
I love this feature! I work at a public library and am finishing my degree in library and information science. I hope to be an official librarian soon, but I can’t quite decide where I want to work. I would love to hear more about your day-to-day work in a future post! 🙂
Hiya 👋🏻 So Happy to meet a fellow librarian! I haven’t done a degree, I’m doing a chartership. Amazing! What would you like to know? There’s so much I wouldn’t know where to start. 😊
Really enjoyed your feature. I’ve been an FE librarian for nearly 20 years and love encouraging students to read, use different information sources and develop their research skills.
Are you the sole librarian or do you work with a team?
👋🏻 It’s so nice meeting other librarians. I am the sole librarian to two schools. It’s a bit crazy, but I love my job!
This is such an interesting feature and I can’t wait to read more posts on it, it must be great to work in a library!
I always love my school librarians, they are always so thoughtful and helpful!
It is really cool being able to read the school librarians point of view!
– Emma 🙂
I love this! I think my school librarian in elementary school was a HUGE part of why I love reading so much. She ran a book club for my elementary school and I found some of my favorite books to this day through it!
