Lily's emotional problems run deep - three miles deep. After she gets kicked out of school for her destructive behaviour, Lily agrees to an unusual fresh start: going with her mum to live at Deephaven, an experimental deep-sea mining rig and research station located at the bottom of the ocean.
Lily instantly regrets her decision: claustrophobic and isolated, it's hardly her idea of home.
Turns out, Deephaven has problems of its own. The head scientist, they quickly learn, has disappeared - just as he was on the brink of a shocking discovery. In the darkness of the deep, something is stirring ... something dangerous.
And it's calling out to Lily.
A mind-expanding thriller set in the ocean's depths, a terrifying struggle for survival - and the story of one girl's path to self-acceptance.Writer A. Connors is an exciting debut author writing for teens and young adultsPerfect for fans of Lauren James, Marie Lu and Marissa Meyer

Well this book, again I picked this up at my scholastic book fair knowing I was going on holiday by the sea and I wanted a themed book. This book was IMPOSSIBLE to put down and is my favourite read of the year so far! I hope I justify it in a review because I just loved it! I describe this as ‘The Meg’ the film, for its incredible oceanic atmosphere and world building with hints of ‘Arrival’ for the communication with an unidentified organism living in the darkness beneath the ocean floor.

Lily Fawcett is going deep beneath the sea to escape her problems. Lily has been emotionally troubled since she was a young age, she has a tendency to lash out and anger will build within her. Her whole world is surrounded by the need to react to everything. So when things took a turn for the worst, her mum takes on a new job in a deep sea mining crew to explore the unknown organisms that are lurking in the darkness. This is her “fresh start”, but with the suspicious disappearance of the professor, an unknown species lurking beneath the deep sea, how deep will Lily go?

This book is genius. It has everything, it has the perfect balance of plot and character driven throughout the story. The pacing and Adam’s writing was enthralling and suspenseful, which made it so painstakingly hard to put down. The atmosphere and world building combined with the magnitude of genres; adventure, thriller, science-fiction captivated me.

I loved the character development of Lily, I felt connected to her on some level and with the fragments of her life, we got an insight into who she is. There is no denying that she is an emotionally raw, deep and open character who accepts her who she is and her flaws and I think we see much more of that as she connects and communicates with others human or otherwise around her. Whilst Lily is very much the star of the book, Adam creates a brilliant cast of characters, some of my favourites being Evan and Ari.

I was hooked and with the sea crashing against the shoreline when I was reading, it was my perfect book to escape into! I love a book that takes me by surprise and one that needs to be shouted about. It’s such a unique and memorable debut novel and that’s why it’s my favourite book of the year so far.

Later this week I will have Adam talking all about his debut book in an incredible interview. So come back to my blog later this week.
