I’m reading on the train down to Wales, this is kind of perfect considering it’s set under the sea and the sea is where I’m heading too. Anyways I digress. This graphic novel comes at the perfect time considering that Aquaman has just come out on Blu-Ray and I can’t wait to finally watch it and now we have Mera: Tidebreaker and how her origin story began. Before I get to my review, here is a little bit more about the graphic novel.

From Danielle Paige, the New York Times best-selling author of Stealing Snow, comes a Mera and Aquaman origin story that explores Mera’s first steps on land as well as her first steps as a hero or a villain, forcing her to choose to follow her heart or her mission to kill.

Mera is teenage royalty, heir to the throne of Xebel, the other not-so-lost colony under the sea. But Mera is destined to wear a different crown, that of Atlantis. When the inhabitants of Xebel plot to overthrow their homeland of Atlantis, Mera is sent to kill the heir to the throne, Arthur Curry. As the unrest between their colonies grows, Mera and Arthur unexpectedly fall in love…will Arthur Curry be the king at Mera’s side in Atlantis, or will he die under her blade?

Mera by Danielle Paige is an astonishing story that explores themes of duty, love, heroism and freedom, all through the eyes of readers’ favorite undersea royalty.

I love how DC are expanding their generation of readers with various origin stories. I was a huge fan of the DC Icons series featuring amazing YA author taking on Wonder Woman, Batman, Catwoman and Superman. Now we have leading YA author Danielle Paige author of Dorothy Must Die series creating Origin stories in the form of graphic. I love how the access to YA sotories and superheros is coming together and I have to say I really enjoyed this book.

I really loved the message that comes across Mera’s origin story. Her father wanted her to be a princess, other people want her to be like her mother. But what about what Mera what’s does she not want to be her own person but maybe with the combination of both. So it takes her to kill the heir of the Alantian’s on land, to be away from her family to prove to them she can be who she wants to be and to believe in her. No someone to be married off to please her father and Xebel. She wants to be more than that. She wants to change the world, her way and the right way.

I haven’t read Dorothy Must Die, and I’m sure writing a book to writing a graphic novel would be totally different. But I love how she incorporates a true strong heroine, how Mera finds herself, making her on decisions and following her heart. Although Mera is a superhero, Danielle makes this a relatable story, so young people can have someone to be inspired by, and that we can find a hero in ourselves. With a great storyline, we have a fantastic artist, Stephen who created such defined the lines of a Mera as a superhero but also showing her vulnerabilities too. It’s great to have that visual artistry of such a strong heroine represented in a YA Comic series.

Rating – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
