Sophia, Mia and Alexis are clinging on to a spark of hope that maybe - just maybe - they're special. But could they really be witches with the power to cast life-changing spells? When the three friends gather to cheer up heartbroken Sophia, they're ready to put their theory to the test. But when long-held secrets are revealed and hard truths start to hit home, their night of bewitching quickly takes an unexpected turn ...

Once again, Holly has done it again! As soon a s I started reading it I had a huge smile on my face, it’s that familiarity of her writing style that just makes you feel very excited and warm inside because you know everything is right in the world with Holly Bourne writing her books. What Magic is This? is no exception to that. She never fails to amaze me on writing a story half the size of all of her other books and yet it still packs a punch.

Three friends all believe that after one night they have magical powers. On the night of the Blood Moon, Sophia, Mia and Alexis have a magical sleepover to cast their own spells. Each one want the hope of solving their own problems, from broken hearts, canine grief and dark secrets. What they might discover instead is the true power being their friendship.

Holly captures so much emotion and rawness in her characters. You each love them in your own way. Mia is shy, she bottles things up and she keeps to herself until she met Sophia. Sophia thinks she is boring, or beige as she calls it. The boy she has liked for ages is finally, well kind-of, going out with her, she’s elated until she realise she’s being used. And Alexis, she is the dram queen, over emotional about everything who literally went head into Sophia and Mia’s friendship as if it was meant to be. My favourite has to be Alexis, I’m sort of surprising myself there as I thought it would be Sophia, but she kind of annoyed my how absorbed she gotten with her one-sided relationship with Aidan. But in a way, she was also the one that overcome the most. Alexis she loves food, she doesn’t care that she’s loud as that her nature and she is literally the glue that binds these amazing powerful humans together. It reminded me so much of my own friendship and how we rely so much on them to make the world a better place.

“Strength in our together and strength in our apart.”

You are always captivated by the magnitude of emotions you feel for Holly’s writing, with her unforgettable characters, each so individual yet so real. How Holly always put you at the heart of the book, almost as if by magic you are instantly connected with the book. Holly has put a spell on you, because this book is all about learning to love yourself and that the greatest spell of all is friendship.

What Magic is This? is a spellbinder! Holly Bourne will put a spell on you with her latest YA novella.
