DISCUSSION | Organising my future bookshelves

Posted October 7, 2019 by Emma in Bookish Post, Discussion Post, Featured, TBR / 5 Comments

Hello my book friends, it’s been a while since my last discussion post. A good month ago I did a Bookshelf Tour post and I enjoyed talking about bookworms accommodating to space restrictions and lots of books. If you missed it then check it out here. So Ella commented on my post, and asked about a how I would organise my bookshelf if I had bookcases, so I thought I would dedicate a post to it.

This is a Bookworm edition, later this week I will do a post as part of my new feature ‘ A Day in the life of a school librarian’ featuring my shelving system. Being a librarian I guess I feel it should be a certain way like my school library but then I feel I haven’t got an identity as a bookworm reader that is separate from work.

I have been thinking about it a lot, and I get so excited thinking about my future library one day. Almost giddy at the prospect of having all of favourites displayed for the world or myself and my boyfriend to see. He’ll probably have his head in his hands. Haha. Anyways here is how I would organise them. (It might change when I actually do it.)

Organising my bookshelves

I did an actual drawing for you so I could visualise it.

So I hope this drawing makes sense. I changed it a fair bit as I kept changing my mind. I sort of want to keep it how I have it at the moment.

My books would be arranged Read books > Dark Romance Section > TBR/ARCs > Reference at the bottom.

Read Books

These will be arranged A-Z of author surname, but with a dedicated favourite author shelf like Holly Bourne, basically I can fill a shelf with her. At the moment these are books I’ve loved and would read again. I can’t keep every one but maybe that will change with bookshelves.

Also thinking should I have a signed edition shelf? Should I? Do you?

Dark Romance Section in my Read books.

So when I got back into reading massively, this was a section I lived by in bookshops, so I have a lot of dark fantasy/vampire books so I would have a section dedicated to this. It would include Twilight, Vampire Academy, Morganville Vampires and many more.

Bottom Shelves

Each bookcase would have a shelf for the really big books. This would include my Harry Potter illustrated editions, childhood and precious books and finally my Reference library. When I was younger and now I loved discovering history, art, cookery and TV/Film companion books, so this is where they would go.

TBR Shelf

ARCs – At the end of the bookcases I will have my ARCs together so they wouldn’t get lost in the shelf and forget to read them. I would organise them by newest first, and they would be in date order of release.

TBR ARCs this would include all of my bought books, unless I feel inclined to add them to the series so they good together. These would be in Rainbow like TBR trolley. So I’m keeping with what I have at the moment.

TWITTER

I did a poll on my Twitter and this is the result so far. The comments have been amazing too. Join in on the conversation.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post. I can’t promise this won’t change when it actually happens. But this most has made me even more excited to build my library.

How do you organise your shelves? I’d love to know.

  1. (Covers face) technically I don’t have organisation!! We are in the middle of planning a reorganisation of our home and my books are a big part of that because they are in piles (eep because I can’t get to the bookshelf at the moment) and stacked on shelves for mg, YA and adult shelves and another bookcase of crime and ‘alternative’ books
We are hoping to convert our conservatory to a proper room with a proper roof and that will be the ‘library/reading/learning room’ and I will have an entire wall of bookcases!! (Still won’t be enough!!)

  2. I love the idea of deciding what your bookshelves will look like before you have them. I would probably change my mind half a dozen times before getting my shelves and several more times after that. I tend to organize my books by author, but not necessarily in alphabetical order. Sometimes I break them into genres and other time I just shove the books wherever they fit. It all depends on what I feel like at the moment.

  3. This is such a cute idea! I dream about my future library often too, and I already have ideas for how I want to arrange things. I just got a TBR cart last weekend and I’m IN LOVE with it. I love the Harry Potter devoted shelf!

  4. AHHHH this is the cutest thing ever! I’m genuinely running out of space on my bookshelf between all the books and funko pops I own. I organize mine by genre, but it isn’t working that well. I’m running out of space for fantasy books, but I only have half a shelf with contemporary books 😰
