Morning my fellow bookworms. Today I bring to you a a potentially new feature for the blog. I was thinking about this post at Christmas time when I was taking a break from everything. Our mental health is key. We need to look after ourselves especially us as bookworms. We have day-to-day jobs, and reading is our relaxation but sometimes we need to be relaxed first to enjoy our books. So this post is tips from one bookworm to another that we need our own self-care routine.

Welcome to Self-Care for Bookworms!

Tip #1 – Take a Break

A week before Christmas day I was debating about whether I should take a break, that I should post daily on my bookstagram still as I have stats to encourage etc or write book reviews for the new year etc. But I actually think that after a 14 week term at work, I needed the break. My blog isn’t a job, nor is my social media. Author and Publishers send us books to enjoy not to worry over or kill ourselves over and we need that time to enjoy them. Don’t you agree?!

So over Christmas I went over to my grandparents – they have no internet. So I had no distractions, no tablet or MacBook to login to all of these things. I purposely turned off my Instagram and Twitter. I do admit I casually looked into it but I had no obligation to it as I had no post to schedule etc. All I took with me was books that I wanted to enjoy and read. I read 3 books in 5 days!!!! Imagine that! The most I’ve read during the year so that’s why I always love Christmas break. Ha.

But after this, I went back home and I was distracted by all the things I didn’t take with me and preparing for 2020 with my blog. That break made me feel relaxed, happy and I enjoyed being a reader. It felt like when I was younger and I didn’t have many obligations apart from school. I miss those days in a way when I had more time to read. I wrote all these ideas for new features on my blog because of this break.

The Remedy… Prepare some downtime for yourself.

Now, life as adult is busy and chaotic. We have full-time jobs, personal lives to live, go out and socialise. Or go and socialise with your favourite YA characters. It’s busy and when is there time to read when we have blogs to write and instagram posts to take. So we need this for ourselves, to just take a step back. Clear your browser history, clear your notifications and just read!

So every so often I will take a few days off, a weekend or part of my half term and have that reading time for myself. I promise you it really does make a difference. Don’t worry about your followers or stats. Enjoy your hobby and love for reading once again.

We are human beings, reading helps our mental health. But we need to find the time and worry less to find it. So Take a Break – you earned it!

I really hoped you enjoyed this new post. Do you want to see more of this feature! I’ve got loads more to write about to create our own Bookworm Self-Care Guide.

Do you take regular breaks? Let me know your thoughts.

  1. This is so important! For me, self care also means occasionally picking up a book to read just to relax – one that I have no intention or obligation of ever reviewing.
