How I recovered from a recent Reading Slump | My top tips

Hello my lovely bookworms, today I’m bring you a bit of different post, more of a discussion post. If you’ve kept up with my blog and my social media you might know that last month I was in a reading slump. I tried to pick up a book and read a few pages but my brain wasn’t invested and I didn’t feel like picking any other book. Which was so hard and I hated it – books surround me every day and I just couldn’t pick one up.

Let me be honest with you all though…Last month a lot was going on around the world and on social media. I can be honest and say it got a bit too much for me I think. I’m not always on social media but I flick through, the stress of the pandemic was helping either. I think what it came down too was that the first few months of lockdown I was on a high from reading. Last month I think I was burnt out from reading.

NOW I’M BACK to reading that is! During my reading slump I asked book Twitter their top tips. So alongside my own reading slump recovering tips, I will also share all of their ideas so you can find the right one for you!

My Top Tips recovering from a Reading Slump

  • Watch/Binge watch a series – if books aren’t cutting it, then watch something. I rewatched the Discovery of Witches series. Which is amazing series if you haven’t watched it. It’s a book series which I haven’t finished so maybe this inspired me to start reading again.
  • Read something you don’t have any expectations – I was sent into a slump by book that is extremely hyped which I don’t think helped me.
  • Reading something light, fluffy, summery – that brings a smile to your face. – The book that got me out of a slump was Love on the Main Stage, Summer music festivals, finding love and being who you want to be.
  • Thriller really help! – I just finished a thriller in 2 days and loved it!
  • Take your time – I’m taking it easy with reading. Picking it up when I want too, not forcing myself either.
  • MOOD READING –Β Now more than ever I need to be a mood reader. Just pick up what you fancy. I do have som blog tours but I’m making sure I mix it up in between with what I want to read.

10 Top Tips from Book Twitter (which I will be following more in the future πŸ˜…)

  1. Reread an old favourite – several people suggested this!
  2. Graphic Novels – @lucasjmaxwell
  3. Reread an old series – I usually re read an old series I enjoyed or haven’t read in a while, makes it a bit easier and the series of books help me get back into a habit of reading! – @mervellousreads
  4. No phone – no distractions – Pick something you really really fancy. Hide your phone. Sit down for a few hours without distractions to be able to get into it. @Booksnest
  5. Change format – Graphic novels, short stories, non-fiction, Kindle/ebooks, audiobooks etc. Audiobooks seem to be really popular.
  6. Read something light and fluffy – when you can’t concentrate on a reread. – @missmaddychats
  7. Switch up genres – if you don’t read fluffy, maybe try something that you’ve never read before.
  8. Book featuring your favourite book tropes – (I really liked this idea). @ACityofBooks
  9. Just take a breakΒ – completely from books for a couple of days. Feel refreshed afterwards. @eastendreader98
  10. Give yourself time to read! – set about some time before bed or at lunchtime etc.

  1. I’ve been on a reading roller coaster the last few months where I am super into reading books one week and not so much the next. I’m in a bit of slump right now actually :/ My tricks for getting out of a slump include reading novellas (they’re short and often leave me wanting more) and listening to my mood.

  2. Great tips, thanks for sharing. I had a reading slump for a couple of years after uni! With everything going on in the world, I started sitting in my garden without my phone just to get away from it and started reading and haven’t stopped since 😁
