New Feature – Let’s Talk YA…

Posted April 12, 2019 by Emma in Blog, Bookish Post, Discussion Post, Holly Bourne, Let's Talk Books, UKYA / 15 Comments

Let's Talk YASo ages ago I posted a tweet about my current read which was Enchantée at the time and this particular post created such a conversation I loved it.  Then I did a poll on Twitter on how we react to some of our posts on our blogs or twitter whether we just Like/RT or Comment and the majority was the first. Which I think is good but there’s something about a conversation about your book, talking about it shares so much within the bookish community.

So Emily from A Short Book Lover and I were talking so we thought we might share a feature called… Let’s Talk YA. – a weekly feature simply to just share and talk about the books you love. So our posts will all be centered around amazing UKYA authors.

So my first author that I want to talk about is Holly Bourne and more specifically the book that made her become one of my favourite authors of all time.

Soulmates – her debut novel.

Holly is renowned for being brutally honest and real in her books. She took the stereotype of a ‘Happily Ever After’ down in her debut novel, Soulmates. That’s what drew me to her books and have continued to this dat. Her writing has developed into something extraordinary.

Soulmates – what if the person who is yours completely, the best person you will ever find actually put the planet at risk. What if their love was earth shattering literally. Their love, creates hurricanes, deathly rainstorms and much more. Poppy the main character is a cynic when it comes to romance in her life and she falls to the decisions of the gods above for her to fall in love with a beautiful musician Noah. A simple touch, a spark sets of a chain reaction, a deadly one.

Looking back on Soulmates now, I’m constantly reminded of this book when we have heavy rain, or a thunderstorm. The ending although controversal and I was heartbroken for it, it also makes us think that although books are for escapism, they also have real life lessons and inspiration and I’ve got that a lot with Holly’s writing and love her for that, For not sugar-coating things and being a real voice in YA.

So let’s talk… Have you read Soulmates? What did you think about? Lets shout to the heavens about this book. Use the hashtag #LetsTalkYA – we’ll be shouting on Twitter too.

Thanks for stopping by and please let me know if you like our new feature. Your thoughts and comments would be amazingly appreciated. Don’t forget to head over to Emily’s blog for her suggestion…

  1. What a great idea! I’ve never read any Holly Bourne, mostly because they fly off the shelf in my library. She was a short-listed author a couple of years ago on the Amazing Book Awards here in Sussex and the students just adore her books. I don’t think we own this title though, so perhaps I’ll buy it and read it BEFORE I put it on the new books shelf 😊

Sounds like a great plan. We have a really read copy in the school library and I’ve just bought a replacement copy. It’s such a great book, and introduction to Holly Bourne. 🙂

  2. I haven’t read Soulmates but I did start It Only Happens in the Movies and it was quite lovely. I haven’t been able to finish it yet due to time constraints and other books taking priority but I really want to! I can see why she’s so beloved, she certainly doesn’t hold back or sugarcoats things, which I like 🙂
Amazing idea! I’ll try to partake in this whenever I can <3

If you are enjoying It Only Happens In the Movies, then you’ll enjoy Soulmates. Thank you so much, would be amazing if you can join and spread the bookish conversation. 🙂 <3

Me too! Fan Forever indeed. How Hard Can Love Be and The Manifesto On How to be Interesting. 🙂

I know I had to reply our school copy as well. I have a whole shelf dedicated to Holly Bourne, I love her.

  3. I love how Holly Bourne always subverts expectations in her books and discusses topics that are relevant to teens right now. Between that and her realistic, complex characters, it’s no wonder she’s an absolute favourite of mine.

I know me too. She’s not afraid to say it how it is either. I love that. I love books to escape but then Holly’s books just speak a different level altogether.

  4. I have not read Soulmates but I did read It Only Happens in the Movies. It killed my soul. 😫😫 One of my favorite contemporary books hands down, if not my favorite. I will be reading more of her brilliant writings.

  5. Hmm. I haven’t read this one, but having that sort in connection with the Earth itself when you’re in love sounds fascinating and I think I need to add it to my TBR? Also – I completely agree with you. As a fellow blogger, I’m always pumped when someone comments on a review? Especially when it’s more than “great review!”. I miss ye olden days when my friends and I would pick apart books for hours. 😁
