My first book review of 2023 and it’s a 5 star read!!! What a way to kick off my reading for this year. The Midnight Game by Cynthia Murphy is everything I needed and more from a gloriously twisty, scary, thrilling horror YA.

Rules of The Midnight Game:Do not turn on the lights.Do not go to sleep.Do not leave the building.
When a group who have met on a creepy Deddit thread decide to meet in real life, they only have one plan in mind: they are going to summon the Midnight Man. And once you start the Midnight Game, you must finish it - there's no other way out! Six strangers. One night. But how many survivors?

One of my goals this year is to read as many 2023/ARCs as I can so I started with Cynthia Murphy’s latest release The Midnight Game and it was the best choice I made. I read Last One to Die a few years ago which I loved. Cynthia has a way of writing that you can’t put down and this was the same.

Would you seek out likeminded strangers online to play a scary game? Do you dare to find out if the Midnight Man is real when you play the Midnight Game? Told in multiple POVs, six teenagers do exactly that. They meet online, on a deddit forum, talking about creepypasta – I can tell you it has nothing to do with food. 😅 I’m clearly out of loop on this as it’s original and creepy stories. Shock horror. Plus that would fit with the story right. They come across the story of the Midnight Man, and a teen that died from playing. Would that scare them off. Nope. So these local random teenagers come together to play the Midnight Game…

What a rollercoaster ride! I loved every second of it. It’s fast-paced, bloody and gory, and unputtadownable. I love the text messages, forum conversations and articles spaced throughout the book. Oh and there is a whole 2 and a half pages dedicated to a school library and books which I loved ALOT. I’m a massive fan of this and added texture and creepiness to the plot. Cynthia also has a way with plots twists – boy does she, there was so many that I didn’t see coming and that is a skill of a true horror, thriller that can either keep you guessing till the very end.

Cynthia Murphy is UKYA’s Queen of Horrors! Every book I read of her has a unique, original, plot line that will honestly have you gripping the book for dear life to see what happens next. But I think, no I KNOW that The Midnight Games is my favourite yet! If you love Kat Ellis, Karen McManus – then you will love Cynthia’s books.

CAWPILE – 9.57
